Adrian Lam’s Leopards make history in low-scoring epic

Coach Adrian Lam has hailed Leigh’s finals-like fight after they kicked off the Super League season with a remarkable 1-0 win over Wigan in golden point.

The Leopards gave Papua New Guinea great Lam a rollercoaster ride in a unique season-opening contest on a bitterly cold Thursday night (local time), battling to a scoreless draw with Wigan.

It marked the first time in Super League history both sides had failed to score after 80 minutes of a match.

Gareth O’Brien landed a long-range drop goal in the first ******* of extra time as the Leopards shocked their neighbours in front of a crowd of 21,748 at the Brick Community Stadium.

It was the first time Leigh had beaten the Warriors since their promotion back to the top flight in 2022, and also their first victory at Wigan for 42 years.

“It’s a nice feeling, a great achievement,” Lam said.

“I’ll take the one point to get the two.

“It was a great game to watch, quite physical. It had a ‘finals’ feel to it.

“I’m not a great supporter of golden point, though. I think if both teams play like that you deserve a point.”

Lam included five new signings in his match-day squad.

“It takes time to bring them together, so I wanted some indication they would turn up for each other. There was plenty of that,” he said.

The Warriors and Warrington Wolves will head to Las Vegas in March, squaring off as part of the NRL’s showpiece weekend in the United States.

Lam, who captained Papua New Guinea at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup, has been rising up the coaching ranks since a stint as Wayne Bennett’s assistant at St George Illawarra.

Last year, the former halfback admitted a role with the new NRL franchise in Port Moresby held a lot of appeal in the long-term future.

Lam is contracted to coach the Leigh Leopards until 2027.
