Astro Bot is a 3D platformer game very similar to Nintendo’s Mario Galaxy. The player controls a little cute robot who goes by the same name as the game and he can jump, hover, punch, and spin attack. The title has a total of 90 levels, split across six galaxies and 60 planets, with each level introducing its own mechanic in the game.

Astro Bot is the fifth installment in the franchise. Its direct predecessor, Astro’s Playroom which was released in 2020, although the game served as a tech demo for players who bought the PlayStation 5 and wanted to experience the full extent of their Dualsense controllers, players loved the idea wanting more and Sony listened.

Sony delivered on the players’ demands of wanting a full-fledged Astro title. In an earnings call between

and Sony president Hiroki Totoki, he highlighted how Astro Bot won four awards in the Game of the Year awards.

At The Game Awards 2024, our first-party title Astro Bot won four categories, including Game of the Year and Best Family Game – the most of any title,

He also mentioned how they are inclined towards expanding the game’s universe and how these awards are a step up towards building a broad portfolio. PlayStation Studios boss, Hermen Hulst also exclaimed about Astro’s significance and how the character is very important to PlayStation.

Astro is very, very important to PlayStation, Obviously we had the pre-install with the PlayStation 5 that millions have embraced and loved, and I think that’s becoming a little bit of a platform to launch this new game now. It’s remarkable that a very small team is able to deliver a game that is so big, it’s really become a great game in itself, and it’s become a celebration of everything PlayStation at this point.

He also praised how a small team like Team Asobi, is able to deliver a game this big and how the game has become a celebration of everything PlayStation related.

Astro Bot gained worldwide attention and quickly dominated the 3D platformer genre. From its captivating plot line to the highly engaging gameplay, the title truly pulled the players into a world full of adventure in a ship that looks like a PlayStation 5.

The success of Astro Bot undoubtedly demonstrates that the size of the development team doesn’t determine a game’s impact but rather, it’s the creativity and innovation poured into the project that truly matters. With Sony now willing to extend their genres and focus on releasing more family games in the future, fans of Astro Bot are eagerly waiting for what Team Asobi will produce next.
