Back when Games Workshop first introduced us to Primaris Space Marines, the faction was considered to be one of the most important additions to the Warhammer 40k franchise.

Unlike previous updates, which focused on changing existing models or adding new units to support old ones, the Primaris Marines featured a complete overhaul design.

With Primaris Marines, Games Workshop decided to go with larger and more powerful models. Their arrival in the lore was considered to be a game-changing evolution as legendary Archmagos Belisarius Cawl secretly crafted them for an entire millennia before using them to defend the Imperium.

Gamers were happy to see the addition of such a game-changing faction. However, long-time fans of the franchise immediately realized what the arrival of Primaris Marines meant for their old Firstborn Space Marine collections. The sheer scale difference with the new models made the old ones outdated. Gamers felt that Games Workshop was ruining the classic Firstborn Marines.

As Primaris Marines weren’t just a new addition in the lore and seemed like a total replacement, gamers felt that they had to transition to them; otherwise, their armies would be wrecked on the battlefield.

What’s worse is that Primaris Marines were also given exclusive access to brand-new weapons in the competitive scene. These included things such as bolt rifles and the lethal Redemptor Dreadnought. On the other hand, Firstborn units didn’t receive much in terms of additions. Seriously, investing in new miniatures just to keep competitive wasn’t a fun experience.
