PlayStation Just Had Its Best Sales Quarter Yet, PS5 Lifetime Sales Now At 75 Million

The PlayStation 5 has reached a new milestone, as Sony revealed that the console has enjoyed its best sales quarter to date. In its financial results for the three months that ended on December 31, 2024, Sony says 9.5 million PS5 consoles were shipped, and with overall sales currently at 75 million units sold, the PS5 is now almost on par with the PS4 at the same point during its lifecycle (76.5 million units).

What’s interesting to note here is that these results also include the $750 PS5 Pro console bundled into them, so it’s not clear yet what its sales impact currently is when compared to the regular models available at a substantially lower price.

, 42% of PS5 purchases were new users and the company also noted that even more PS4 owners are migrating to PS5. Sony says games like Astro Bot and Helldivers 2 were also successful at helping it expand into family and live-service game markets.

Sony did note that monthly active users have also risen 5% year-on-year on all platforms–up to 129 million now, with half of them being on PS4–while sales of games and consoles had increased by 16%. Overall, the games division has seen major increases as operating income increased by 37% year-over-year, thanks in part to higher profit margins on hardware and third-party games.

PlayStation Plus and Network Services revenue has also increased by 20% and 28%, respectively, and the adoption of digital software has also steadily risen to 74%, a notable jump when compared to 66% last year. Sony has now raised its sales revenue forecast by 3% for the current fiscal year ending in April 2025.

Looking at the rest of 2025, Sony has a big year ahead of it. While upcoming games like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and Ghost of Yotei weren’t present during the February 2025 State of Play, the livestream did reveal numerous third-party games, a Days Gone remaster, and Housemarque’s Saros.
