White Station Middle School assistant principal accused of *****

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis-Shelby County Schools assistant principal was arrested on Monday and indicted on an aggravated ***** charge.

Dr. Marcus Matthews, 44, serves as the assistant principal of Grade 7 at White Station Middle School.

He is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools provided the following statement regarding Matthews’ arrest:

“Memphis-Shelby County Schools is aware that Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies visited White Station Middle School on Monday to meet with a school staff member who was escorted from the building and later placed under arrest. The Sheriff’s Department has not released details of the charges leading to the arrest, but this incident does not appear to be related to immigration enforcement.  The District has placed the staff member on investigative leave until more information becomes available. The safety of students and staff remains our top priority.”

“I’m just at a loss for words with it because that’s just so surprising,” said Seth Russell, a previous student at the middle school. “When I was there I felt like everything was fine and all the staff were you know really helpful. I mean, I just feel bad for all the students.”

One mother said her sons could not stop crying after hearing the news because they adored Dr. Matthews.

“I hope and pray that he gets the help, and so I have compassion for that and for the victims, my gosh,” said the woman.
