(FOX 5/KUSI) — Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 8 Monday, according to California Highway Patrol. The incident occurred at around 7:18 p.m., just east of 70th Street in La Mesa, when a series of rear-end collisions unfolded in the eastbound lanes. As explained by CHP, a 79-year-old man from La Mesa was driving a 2004 Toyota with a 77-year-old female passenger, also from La Mesa. For reasons still under investigation, the Toyota was either traveling at a slow speed or had come to a stop in the far left lane of the freeway. Oceanside Police investigate after body found in dirt lot Meanwhile, a 34-year-old woman from San Diego, driving a 2016 Dodge, was approaching the Toyota from behind and didn’t see the Toyota in time, authorities said. The Dodge, which also had a 4-year-old male passenger, collided into the rear of the Toyota. As the ****** unfolded, a 63-year-old woman from El Cajon, driving a 2017 Kia, was unable to avoid the accident and struck the rear of the Dodge, CHP explained further. Then, a 30-year-old man from El Cajon, driving a 2017 Mercedes, was also unable to avoid the wreckage, with debris from the collision damaging his vehicle. The driver of the Toyota succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, authorities confirmed. His 77-year-old passenger was transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital but was later pronounced deceased by medical staff. The driver and 4-year-old passenger of the Dodge were also transported to Sharp Grossmont Hospital for precautionary evaluation but were not reported to have sustained significant injuries. The driver of the Kia suffered only minor injuries, while the Mercedes driver was unharmed. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the ****** and it remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident, according to CHP.
