Dollars still flow after political donations shake-up

NEW LAWS GOVERNING POLITICAL DONATIONS:

* Political candidates can receive up to $50,000 from a single donor

* Political parties can receive up to $450,000 from a single source because a person can donate $50,000 to each state or territory branch and the national branch

* Donors can offer up to $1.6 million to different political parties and candidates nationwide, but this is limited to $250,000 in any state or territory

* Aggregated donations over $5000 from a person will need to be disclosed, after the threshold was lowered from $16,900

* Federal spending for non-political parties, like unions and special interest groups such as Climate 200, will be capped at $11 million

* Major parties can spend up to $90 million across Australia, while spending from independent MPs is capped at $800,000

* Senate candidates can spend up to $200,000 for each federal electorate in their state
