Jim Chalmers barely let the S-word pass his lips throughout dozens of interviews and press conferences in the lead-up to last year’s Budget.

The Treasurer only publicly uttered the word “surplus” three times in two months. One was a political ******* on his counterpart Angus Taylor and the others were noting how frequently he was being asked if he would deliver one.
