Volunteers needed for Disabled Surfing Association Great Southern’s Let’s Go Surfing event at Middleton Beach

Albany’s second all-abilities surfing event for the year will return to Middleton Beach this weekend, but a record number of surfers has organisers calling for more volunteers to make it a success.

Nearly 40 surfers signed up for Saturday’s Let’s Go Surfing morning — an increase from the roughly 30 surfers who attended the January event.

Organised by Disabled Surfing Association Great Southern, the initiative aims to provide people living with disability a safe environment to give surfing a go.

President Kerry Oakley said she hoped to get more volunteers on board.

“More volunteers means more time in the water for our surfers,” she said.

“Even if you can only be there for an hour or two, that’s going to be a great help.”

Ms Oakley said there are plenty of ways for volunteers to help out whether they know how to surf or not.

“You don’t need to be a surfer, you just need to be comfortable standing in the water,” she said.

“Even if you’re not comfortable being in the water at all, volunteers can help with set up or pack down or can be on the beach entertaining the surfers while they wait for their turn on the boards.

“There’s a way for everyone to help out, no matter what your level of experience or comfort is when you get there.”

Ms Oakley said the event was a great opportunity to get involved in a feel-good community event.

“Seeing the smiles on the surfers’ faces when they come in on a wave is absolutely priceless,” she said.

“It’s something that we take for granted and I think it’s a great perspective shift for able-bodied people to see the absolute joy from someone who doesn’t have the opportunity to get in the water whenever they want to.”

Set up starts from 7.30am, with surfers in the water from 9.30am, and pack down is at 12.30pm after a barbecue lunch.
