The game takes place in the future on a planet called Super Earth, where players take on dangerous missions while hoarding off waves of enemies which are the insect-like Terminids, the cyborg descendants Automatons, and the ancient alien race Illuminate. In Helldivers 2, players are locked in a brutal war against three formidable factions, but the sequel from 2024 places a special emphasis on one race in particular, a species far more dangerous than ever imagined. The Illuminate, also known as the Squ’iths, who were once the most technologically advanced civilization in the galaxy.

Originally the Illuminates were a peaceful species, but everything changed after the Great War in 2015, which had left the Federation of Super Earth as the dominant power. The Illuminates opted to co-exist with the Super Earth Federation, but when they discovered how the alien species have planet-destroying technology, humanity refused to accept the offer and war broke out.

Eventually, the Illuminates lost in the war and suffered heavy losses with their entire species thought to be wiped out. But now, they have returned from the shadows, stronger, scarier, and with forces of human zombies. They are hell-bent on exacting revenge against the Super Earth Federation.
