Rick Ardon and Susannah Carr: Seven viewers asked to submit memories as news duo mark 40-year milestone

West Australians are being asked to send in their memories of legendary news duo Susannah Carr and Rick Ardon, as they celebrate a record-breaking 40 years of reading the Seven bulletin together.

Ardon and Carr, who did their first broadcast together on January 24, 1985, are the Guinness World Record holders for longest serving news anchor duo, an achievement ratified in 2022.

from 6am on Sunday to submit stories and memories of Carr and Ardon, some of which would be shared on TV or in print.

Writing in STM, friend and long-time colleague Alison Fan writes about the bond the pair has formed with their audience over the course of thousands of bulletins.

Fan, an acclaimed journalist who had know Ardon and Carr since before they started working together, revealed that she was asked about the pair on a daily basis by friends and strangers alike.

“When their faces are literally in your face, on your television in your home at six o’clock every night of the week for some 40 years, it creates a unique bonding and relationship that has thrived and flourished for generations of West *********** viewers,” Fan wrote.

“They just feel like family. It is rare that any public personality can sustain that level of connection for four decades.”

Fan believed Ardon and Carr’s success stemmed from “professionalism, dedication, care and sheer hard work”.

“Far from simply reading the news, they know what they are talking about because they are both fastidious about checking and double checking what they tell you and how they look,” she wrote.

“An old-school emphasis on correct dress, correct grammar, correct pronunciation, correct facts and appropriate tone and intonation that sees them adapt their delivery when moving from a serious story to a lighthearted one. It all adds up to a TV presence that is, for viewers, as comfortable and reassuring as their favourite couch.”

A half-hour TV special with the duo is scheduled to air on Seven at 7pm on February 26.
