Modi’s BJP wins landslide victory in Delhi election

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s nationalist party has won a landslide victory in regional elections in the capital New Delhi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 48 of 70 seats in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, defeating the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, known as a harsh critic of Modi, conceded defeat and congratulated the BJP.

In a video on X, the three-time chief minister of Delhi said he hoped Modi’s party would honour its promises.

More than 15.6 million people were eligible to cast their ballots in the National Capital Territory, which includes New Delhi.

Turnout was more than 60 per cent.

The victory is a prestigious one for Modi’s BJP, which lost its absolute majority in the lower house of the national parliament in last year’s general election.

The party campaigned in Delhi on the provision of free health services and monthly payments of more than 2000 rupees ($A37) to poorer women.

It has now returned to power in the capital territory for the first time in 27 years.

Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi’s Congress party once again came away empty-handed. His party’s fight against environmental pollution, inflation and corruption will continue, he said on X.
