Rohit Sharma bristles at scrutiny over his lean run

India captain Rohit Sharma has bristled at scrutiny of his lean run with the bat on the eve of the first of three ODIs against England in Nagpur.

Rohit elected to sit out India’s fifth and final Test against Australia last month, having amassed a meagre 164 runs in his previous 15 innings in the format at an average of less than 11.

When asked if he was confident he could stop the rot as India begin their preparations for the Champions Trophy which starts later this month, Rohit said: “What kind of a question is that?

“This is a different format, a different time. As usual, as cricketers we know there will be ups and downs and I have faced a lot in my career. This is nothing new to me.

“We know every day is a fresh day, every series is a fresh series. I’m looking forward to the challenge, not looking at what has happened in the past.

“Clearly, you don’t, so there is no reason for me to look behind too much. It’s important I focus on what is coming up, it’s as simple as that. Try and start the series on a high, let’s see what happens.”

India have added Varun Chakravarthy to their squad after the mystery spinner captured the player-of-the-series award for taking 14 wickets in the 4-1 T20 win over Jos Buttler’s side.

But paceman Jasprit Bumrah will miss Thursday’s opener and the second ODI in Cuttack on Sunday because of a back injury sustained in Australia while fears are building he could be sidelined for longer.

It was hoped the International Cricket Council’s men’s cricketer and Test cricketer of the year would be fit to play in the third ODI in Ahmedabad next Wednesday and he has been included in India’s provisional Champions Trophy squad although his availability rests on the results of a scan.

“Jasprit, we’re waiting on some update about his scan which is due to happen in the next few days,” Rohit added. “Once we get that scan, we’ll get more clarity on where he stands.”
