Katanning’s Paul Bradley accepted the senior citizen award for his critical and dedicated St John WA work

A lifelong volunteer has been acknowledged for his vital work with St John and junior sport clubs participation in Katanning’s Citizen of the Year Awards ceremony.

Paul Bradley accepted the Katanning senior citizen of the year award in front of about 150 community members at Lions Park on January 26.

Mr Bradley began volunteering for St John WA when he retired about 19 years ago, and has been dedicated to caring for the community, training new volunteers in Katanning and neighbouring sub-branches, and organising volunteer succession planning to ensure all necessary St John WA roles are filled.

He also contributed to junior sports in his early years by umpiring, co-ordinating uniforms, and providing transport to games and training.

Shire of Katanning president Kristy D’Aprile said Mr Bradley played a critical role for St John WA.

“Paul’s immense dedication and quiet humility make him a true cornerstone of our community,” she said.

“Paul has taken every opportunity to enhance his skills, ensuring he could serve at the highest standard.

“Until recently, he was available for call-outs at all hours, embodying selflessness and reliability.

“His leadership extended beyond training, as he played a pivotal role in planning and supervising the renovation of the local sub-branch clubrooms, contributing his time and expertise from start to finish.”

Mr Bradley said it was “terribly important to volunteer”, not only for his own satisfaction but to ensure St John WA’s service to the community could continue to exist.

“I feel very, very privileged and humbled to think that someone had nominated me because what I’ve been doing was because I wanted to,” he said.

“It’s a very rewarding thing giving back to the community and help people.

“And with the training we get from St John, we are confident enough to go out and help.”

The long-term volunteer urged others to join St John WA and help progress and maintain the Katanning unit.
