Konstas comes down with stomach bug in first Test

Axed opener Sam Konstas has come down with a stomach bug and will stay at the *********** team hotel for a second consecutive day of the Test series opener against Sri Lanka.

After being dropped from the XI to make way for Travis Head’s move to the top of the order, teenage star Konstas reported a severe headache on Thursday.

His illness meant he remained at the team’s beachside hotel in Galle on Friday’s third day of play, isolated from teammates and monitored by the *********** team’s doctor.

Australia are confident Konstas’ illness is not serious.

to congratulate No.5 Josh Inglis, who took his spot in the XI, on making a century on Test debut on day two.

Australia had been impressed by Konstas’s response to being dropped for the series opener despite helping secure a series win over India in his first two Tests.

“There’s a lot to like and be impressed about Sam,” selector Tony Dodemaide said earlier this week.

“One of the things is his ability to take things in his stride. It’s remarkable really, whether it’s playing in front of 90,000 and Jasprit Bumrah at the MCG or getting told that you’re left out of the Test.

“He was like, ‘Oh yeah, mate, no stress. I get it’.”

With 19-year-old Konstas unavailable, Australia called on Nathan McSweeney as a substitute fielder when Sri Lanka made it to the crease late on day two.

Filling in for sore double-centurion Usman Khawaja, McSweeney took a brilliant slips catch that helped consign Sri Lanka to 3-44 at stumps.

The dominant Australians had declared at 6-654 just after 4pm local time on Thursday.
