Europe has been particularly protective of privacy rights and its General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive and stringent data privacy laws in the world. GDPR breaches can lead to fines up to 4% of a company’s total global turnover. The 27-country European Union last year agreed to landmark rules which impose strict transparency obligations on high-risk AI systems and lighter ones for general-purpose AI models. Fines for violations range from 7.5 million euros, or 1.5% of turnover, to 35 million euros or 7% of global turnover depending on the type of violations.
