Lay’s Potato Chip Recall Clocks In At The FDA’s Highest Risk Level: What To Know

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated a recall of Lay’s potato chips across Oregon and Washington and labeled the affected product with its highest risk level. According to the

, the recall was initiated on December 13, 2024, and the risk level was assessed as a “Class I” alert on January 27, 2025. The reason for the recall is the potential undeclared presence of milk, a known allergen, in the affected products.

The voluntary recall was announced by the Frito-Lay company in December. According to the agency’s

Per the FDA’s enforcement report, 6,344 bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips were recalled. Those affected had both a Guaranteed Fresh date of February 11, 2025 and a manufacturing code of either 6462307xx or 6463307xx. In a December 16, 2024

What The Frito-Lay Recall Means

This is not the first recall in recent months related to undeclared allergens. Also in January, Quaker recalled boxes of its pancake and waffle mix due to potential milk allergens, and Paras Golden Raisins were recalled over undeclared sulfites, a chemical compound that can cause allergic reactions.

Milk is one of the nine “major food allergens” identified by the FDA, which companies are required to clearly label on their products, in accordance with the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA). Symptoms of food allergies can include hives, cramps, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, and even loss of consciousness.

Only the specified 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips have been recalled; other Lay’s products are unaffected. Customers who suspect they have been affected should check their products for the stated date and manufacturing code, and dispose immediately of any contaminated bags. They can also contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 800-352-4477 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. CST, Monday through Friday.
