Gascoyne and Pilbara weather: Bureau warns of extreme temperatures of up to 48C

Residents in northern WA are set to swelter through another few days of extreme temperatures warns the Bureau of Meteorology.

Parts of the Pilbara, Gascoyne and Mid West regions will be particularly toasty over the weekend, with the mercury expected to soar into the high 40s.

The Gascoyne and the town of Murchison are predicted to peak at 48C on Sunday, while Meekatharra, Wiluna and many of the Goldfields towns will sit between an equally stifling 45C to 47C.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathan How said there would be little to no reprieve from the heat until late next week.

“So very, very hot conditions inland,” he said.

“We are reminding WA folks to stay cool, we’ll see very little reprieve from the heat on the way, we do see the heat really only dissipating late next week, and only very little at that.”

The WA Country Health Service has issued a warning for southern and inland Pilbara, Mid West, Gascoyne, Wheatbelt and Goldfields to prepare for extreme temperatures and stay up-to-date with health warnings.

“We advise people should delay travel in the hottest part of the day,” a spokesperson said.

“Limit time outdoors. If you need to go outside, try to do so in the early morning or late evening and if you do go outside, make sure to put on a hat and sunglasses, apply sunscreen and try to stay in the shade.”

It comes as Geraldton recorded its equal hottest day ever last week, when the mercury soared to 49.3C on Monday, January 20.
