2027 Rugby World Cup: Perth snubbed for quarter final hosting duties in blow for WA rugby

Perth has been snubbed for a Rugby World Cup quarter final hosting opportunity in 2027, with Optus Stadium deemed not large enough to host one of the tournament’s knockout matches despite being the third-biggest stadium in Australia.

WA tourism minister Rita Saffioti said the state government received feedback Optus Stadium’s capacity, rather than its isolation and travel factor, was the reason given for missing out on the key games.

Sydney will host the final, the two semi-finals, and the bronze medal match.

Optus Stadium was on Thursday morning confirmed to host the opening match of the tournament on October 1, which will feature the Wallabies.

Seven matches will be played in WA.
