Mr Jones, also the Financial Services Minister, was elected as the Whitlam MP in 2010 — an electorate that covers part of the Illawarra and the Southern Highlands. He becomes the fourth high-ranking Labor member to quit ahead of the next election — due by May 17 — after Linda Burney, Brendan O’Connor and Bill Shorten all announced their resignations last year. In a statement, Mr Jones said he was proud of his track record, and thanked Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for “his friendship and support over many decades”. “I want to thank the members of the *********** Labor Party, whose values I hold dear and have always attempted to advance in my role as a Member of Parliament, Shadow Minister and Minister,” he said. “To my family and friends, whose love and support has enabled me to represent our great community with the dedication it deserves, I thank you wholeheartedly. “ Mr Jones won the seat with a comfortable 10.1 per cent margin at the 2022 election, but this has narrowed to 8.3 per cent with redistribution. More to come.
