PlayStation names new sole president and CEO, as Hermen Hulst takes studios role

Hideaki Nishino has been named the new president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, ending the current co-CEO structure that has been in place for the past eight months.

Last year it was announced that Nishino and Hermen Hulst would replace Jim Ryan as joint CEOs, with Nishino appointed CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group and Hulst – who was previously head of PlayStation Studios and Guerrilla Games – becoming CEO of its Studio Business Group.

Now Sony has announced that, as of April 1, Nishino will become president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment as a whole, as well as his continued role as CEO of the Platform Business Group.

Hulst will continue to serve as CEO of the Studio Business Group, but will now report to Nishino.

Sony Group president, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki, who had been serving as chairman of SIE with Nishino and Hulst reporting to him, will now step down from the role to become president and CEO of Sony Group, allowing Nishino to lead SIE.

“I am truly honored to take the helm at Sony Interactive Entertainment,” Nishino said in a statement. “Technology and creativity are two of our biggest strengths as we continue to focus on developing experiences that deliver entertainment for everyone.

“We will continue to grow the PlayStation community in new ways, such as IP expansion, while also delivering the best in technology innovation.

“I want to thank Hermen for his expertise and leadership as he continues his role as CEO, Studio Business Group. I am deeply grateful for the PlayStation community and their continued support and I am very excited for what the future holds.”

According to Sony, in his continuing role as CEO of the Studio Business Group, Hulst will continue to lead the development, publishing and business operations of SIE’s first-party games, and is “responsible for developing games across many devices including PlayStation consoles and PCs and bringing video game IP to new mediums through PlayStation Productions”.
