A man was found guilty of all charges related to an assault case in which he attempted to stab a woman and her three underage daughters, according to the Kern County District Attorney’s Office.

Daniel Villareal, 56, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon, willful cruelty to a child, misdemeanor vandalism and possession of methamphetamine. Villareal also had two prior strike convictions, the DA’s Office said.

A woman and her three daughters — ages 17, 14 and 3 — were driving to the Foods Co. on White Lane April 23 to buy groceries. They were preparing to exit the car when Villareal opened the front passenger side door, where the 14-year-old was sitting, and brandished a kitchen knife while preparing to strike her, according to the DA’s Office.

The mother closed the car door on her daughter’s side and drove away, the DA’s Office said. As they were driving away, Villareal threw a bag at the car’s windshield and damaged it.

The bag, which remained on the hood of the car, contained Villareal’s California ID card, the DA’s Office said.

Police found Villareal at a Fastrip across the street from the grocery store parking lot where the assault occurred, according to the DA’s Office. A search found that Villareal was in possession of knives and methamphetamine.

The DA’s Office said Villareal is facing up to 25 years to life in prison due to this being his third-strike offense.

Sentencing is set for Feb. 25.
