Retired Perth Scorcher Craig Simmons has welcomed Big Bash League 14 final hero Mitch Owen to his ultra-exclusive club, the sub-40 ball century club, and cheekily challenged him to an eat-off to decide who is really the best.

Owen hit one of the greatest T20 knocks of all time to lead his hometown franchise to a maiden Big Bash crown on Monday night, demolishing the Sydney Thunder by seven wickets at Ninja Stadium.

It caps off a breakout campaign for the power-packed all-rounder, who has announced himself as a man on the rise and in line for higher honours.

And it couldn’t have come at a better time for the men in purple.

Chasing 183 to claim their first title, having lost two finals previously, Owen made it look easy, launching a staggering 42-ball attack to blitz Sydney’s shell-shocked bowlers.

His 108 from 42 broke the Thunder’s will as Hobart chased down the total in just 14.1 overs and saw Owen equal Simmons for the fastest-ever BBL ton.

Simmons, nicknamed ‘The Big Ship’, struck 102 off 41 against Adelaide Strikers at the WACA in 2014, reaching the special three-figure mark from his 39th delivery, as Owen did on Monday night.

Even before Owen had completed wiping the floor with Sydney’s bowlers, Simmons took to X to share his appreciation for the Hurricane’s opener’s efforts.

“Serious knock by big boy Owen, great 100 in a final,” he wrote.

“Nice to have another member in the sub 40 ball 100 club. Maybe we can take that player of the match KFC voucher and settle it over an eat off.”
