Elliot Yeo injury: West Coast Eagles star’s setback revealed as midfielder in doubt for season opener

West Coast star Elliot Yeo is in serious doubt for the Eagles’ season opener having sustained a double injury blow following a training mishap on Friday.

Yeo was sent for scans on his knee and ankle last Friday after suffering an injury during a match simulation session at Mineral Resources Park.

There were fears the 31-year-old had ruptured his ACL after being tackled during the session, but those fears were allayed earlier on Monday before the club confirmed an MCL injury later in the day.

Yeo has also sustained a syndesmosis damage to his right ankle in the incident, with the Eagles yet to determine a time frame for his return.

It means Yeo is racing to be fit to play in their season opener in just under seven weeks’ time on March 16.

“There are always risks involved as we increase the intensity at training to prepare for the season, and unfortunately Elliot has sustained injuries to his right knee and ankle,” Eagles general manager of football Gavin Bell said.

“We are working through his rehab program and a return-to-play timeline.

“At this stage, we’re hopeful he will be available in the early part of the season.”

West Coast will return from a four-day break on Wednesday to continue their pre-season, with an eye on their first practice match against Richmond at Mineral Resources Park on February 17.

They will then host North Melbourne down in Bunbury on March 1 ahead of their round one clash against Gold Coast at Optus Stadium a fortnight later.
