Anthony Albanese confident Labor ‘can form Government’ at next election despite dismal polling

Anthony Albanese is confident Labor can form Government at the next election after a disastrous poll showed a majority of Australians believe the Coalition will win.

The latest Newspoll, conducted for the ***********, found the Coalition lead Labor on a two-party preferred basis 51-49, while the Prime Minister’s approval ratings had slid to this lowest since taking office with net minus 20.

The “better PM” gap between Mr Albanese and his opponent Peter Dutton had also narrowed to just three points, while Labor dropped two percentage points on primary support to 31 per cent to the Coalition’s consistent 39 per cent.

An increased number of Australians now believe the next election will result in a Coalition ********* Government, with less than a third of voters expecting a Labor ********* Government.

The PM said he wasn’t paying attention to the polls, but that he doesn’t “take election wins for granted”.

“Labor can form government after the next election,” Mr Albanese told reporters in Perth.

“We are the only political party that is even trying to form government in our own right. You have in the Liberals and the Nationals a formal coalition. We never know what the basis of that agreement is, and quite often them combining with the Greens to form the no-alition in the Senate to block our agenda.

“We also have a range of independents occupying seats that historically have been held by the Coalition.”

He said Labor holds 78 seats and “we will be campaigning to form a majority Labor Government”.

“And we, I believe, that we will be in a position to do so,” he said.

The poor polling came despite an early cross-country charm offensive laden with billions of dollars worth of infrastructure announcements designed to pitch a second-term Labor Government to voters.
