Winter weather advisory for Sacramento: rain and snow expected

(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento area residents may have noticed the weather getting colder and the winds picking up.

National Weather Service Sacramento has a winter weather advisory until Sunday at 4 p.m.

As of 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, it is partly cloudy and 54 degrees Fahrenheit. Tonight, the temperature will drop to 39 degrees Fahrenheit with clear skies and winds from the north ranging from five to 10 mph, according to National Weather Service Sacramento.

National Weather Service said that as of 2:20 p.m. on Saturday, the Stockton area was cloudy and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Tonight, the temperature will be 41 degrees Fahrenheit, with occasional rain, light winds, and a 70% chance of rain.

When Lake Tahoe residents leave their residences, the temperature is currently 53 degrees Fahrenheit, with the lows being at 40 degrees Fahrenheit tonight, with the possible 50% chance of rain coming in.

The Placerville area has a temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit as of 2:30 p.m., with the lows at 39 degrees Fahrenheit, with showers coming in this evening with clear skies. Winds will be coming in from the East, ranging from five mph to 10 mph, and a 70% chance of rain, according to National Weather Service.

Four to six inches of snow are expected above 5,000 feet and up to eight inches over peaks south of U.S. Highway 50, according to National Weather Service.

Wind gusts will be up to 45 mph to 55 mph, with the heaviest gusts expected on Saturday evening closer to the mountain area.

Officials said that the drivers may need to stop to put chains on their tires. Some of the other impacts are the roads being covered with slick snow which may cause some travel delays.

A wind advisory is in effect by the National Weather Service starting at 10. a.m. on Sunday.

Residents in some parts of the Sacramento Valley can expect winds between 15 mph and 25 mph, with gusts between 40 mph and 50 mph. Those in the Northeast Foothills and Mountains can expect winds between 20 mph and 30 mph, with gusts between 45 mph and 55 mph.

National Weather Service says the winds may cause some difficulty in driving, there may be downed trees, power outages, and if there are loose objects around, it may get blown away. The impact level is moderate.

Sacramento area residents may see a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms in southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin Valleys and in the Motherlode starting in the afternoon and heading towards the evening.

National Weather Service said that the following are considered to be hazards:

Mountain snow and rain showers return to the forecast later today for a small portion of Northern California. If the areas have some rain, we will see slick roads which can cause some travel delays as people commute.
