Multi-vehicle ****** gridlocks I-8 traffic as rain wets roadway

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Rainy weather made for wet road conditions Sunday morning, leading to a multi-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 8 near San Diego State University, according to a Sig Alert from California Highway Patrol.

The incident was first reported at 8:35 a.m., with CHP officials noting a vehicle went down into a ditch near the Waring Road exit. Shortly after, another vehicle spun out and went off the roadway in the same area.

The traffic disruptions only continued from there with CHP reporting that a third vehicle also went off the roadway, while a fourth vehicle t-boned another and also went into a ditch in the area. By 8:40 a.m., the Sig Alert noted that at least four vehicles had major damage and multiple people were injured. The nature of those injuries remains unknown.

At 9 a.m., Caltrans San Diego announced that the left three lanes of westbound I-8 were blocked due to this incident. FOX 5/KUSI captured images at the scene with traffic seen backed up for miles.
