18-year-old arrested for stealing guns, merchandise from Academy Sports & Outdoors in Decatur

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — An 18-year-old was arrested after police say he hid out in an Academy Sports & Outdoors until after hours and stole multiple guns and other merchandise.

Landon Kane Melson is charged with third-degree burglary and 14 counts of second-degree theft

According to the Decatur Police Department, officers responded to an alarm call at Academy Sports and Outdoors, located at 1205 Wimberly Drive SW, on January 22. When they arrived, officers found a door left open at the back of the business.

Investigators said Melson entered the store during business hours and hid behind merchandise.

After the store closed, police said Melson broke into the gun case in the store’s firearm section. DPD said he then took multiple firearms and other merchandise, then exited the store through the back door.

DPD’s Property Crimes Detectives investigated and identified Melson as the suspect.

On January 23, DPD said officers with assistance from Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives located Melson at a local business and arrested him.

Melson is being held in the Morgan County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
