Year of the Snake: West Aussies to join global Lunar New Year festivities

Tens of thousands of West Aussies are expected to join billions across the world to celebrate the snake zodiac this 2025 Lunar New Year.

Events across Perth over the next few weeks will include a community fair with traditional lion and dragon dance performances.

A symbol of mysteriousness, wisdom, intuition and elegance — the Year of the Snake represents transformation and growth.

The snake zodiac is shared by famous figures Taylor Swift, Bob Dylan, Pablo Picasso and Anne Frank — but also WA Premier Roger Cook and Liberal leader Libby Mettam.

The date of the Lunar New Year changes every year and falls on Wednesday, January 29 in 2025.

WA’s Chung Wah Association will celebrate the occasion with the much-loved Perth ******** New Year Fair on February 2 at the Northbridge Piazza and said it was about connecting the WA ******** community.

There will also be celebrations at Elizabeth Quay between from 6pm each evening between January 29 and February 2, with more than 60 market stalls, traditional red envelope giveaways, and cultural performances.

London Court has been decorated again with bright lanterns and will offer face painting, calligraphy, lantern-making, and a ******** musical instrument ensemble performance between January 30 and February 6.

The exclusive annual ******-tie WA ******** New Year Ball will be hosted on February 8 by the WA ******** Chamber of Commerce.

The $3800-per-table ball was last year attended by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Roger Cook at Crown.

This year the ritzy event is expected to host more than 300 guests at the Ritz-Carlton Perth Elizabeth Quay ballroom and will include a performance by Malaysian-born comedian Dr Jason Leong.

Chung Wah will also host a ******** New Year Ball the day before at the Pan Pacific.

Perth and Shanghai will again be connected by China Eastern Airlines during ******** New Year.

Flights operate from January 24 to February 7.

According to the ******** zodiac Premier Roger Cook is in for a lucky year.

Both Mr Cook and Libby Mettam were born in the Year of the Snake.

However, Mr Cook is a “wood snake” whereas, 1977-born Mettam’s “fire snake” apparently doesn’t have as favourable career luck and needs to be mindful of burnout.

Her Churchlands candidate and Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas has “relatively good” career fortune as a “metal pig” but he may “have arguments with colleagues or subordinates at work”.

For “water rat” Rita Saffioti, financial opportunities may arise. But there’s a warning to find the right “risk-reward ratio” and advice that “diversification is wise”.

Opposition Leader Shane Love, who is a “metal ox” could face “some challenges in the middle of the year” with colleagues and leaders.

“Metal dog” Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is described as “reliable” but “stubborn”. He’s advised to wake up early, co-operate with colleagues, and be wary of financial pressures in 2025.

Like Mr Dutton, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is described as “reliable” but will be lucky financially this year as a “water rabbit”.

But the Labor leader has been warned he may face “changes” and will need to adjust his work pace to “new challenges and opportunities”. Romantically, water rabbits may face occasional quarrels.
