Australia Day Honours: Surprise award for Julian Burt, as he vows to continue joint work with wife Alexandra

A self-described “low-key” rich lister has spoken of the joint efforts he has achieved along with his wife after his surprise recognition in this year’s Australia Day honours.

Julian Burt has been awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his significant service to the arts, to the church and to the environment.

Mr Burt’s family is steeped in WA history and he is descended from the State’s first chief justice, Sir Archibald Burt. The connection to WA shines through his more than 20 year contribution as patron of the Football Hall of Fame Western Australia.

Along with wife Alexandra Burt — the granddaughter of Lang Hancock’s business partner Peter Wright, and daughter of Wright Prospecting founder Michael Wright — Mr Burt bought Bullo River Station, in the Northern Territory, in 2016.

An almost two decades long relationship with the Anglican Diocese in Perth — where he has served in a range of roles on internal committees, including the St George’s Cathedral Foundation for the Arts since 2021 — has also been featured in Mr Burt’s acknowledgement.

He has also served as a National Gallery Foundation director and as a board member for WA Opera.

“It was quite a surprise to receive this honour,” Mr Burt told The Sunday Times.

“My wife and I do many things and have never been ones to seek the limelight, in fact we both try to remain quite low-key.

“The surprise is then that someone has noticed and now this tremendous recognition, which I am humbled to receive.

“We will continue to participate and contribute to important projects in the community that align with our values and interests and I also pass on my sincere congratulations to all those on this year’s honours list, as well as the many more who contribute across the country.”
