Valorant Opting for 128-Tick Servers Was Mainly Done to Mitigate Peeker’s Advantage

Over the past few years, Valorant has set a new standard for competitive shooters. The Riot Games shooter has redefined the genre thanks to its unique mechanics and relatively balanced experience. Valorant has amassed a massive player base and also netted a few awards over the last couple of years. Being the high-stakes game that it is, Valorant players, it comes as no surprise that even milliseconds matter in the game. However, players began to take undue advantage of a phenomenon known as peeking.

Simply put, peeking is a strategy where a player peeking around a corner has an advantage due to a split-second delay in how the server processes information. Despite the incredibly limited windows, players known in as peekers, have been using this tactic and as a result, they are dominating matches.

Will the scourge of peekers end in Valorant?

The peeker advantage isn’t limited to Valorant alone. Veterans of competitive shooters will know that this phenomenon has been plaguing the genre for years now. Players have even begun developing new techniques that compliment the peeker’s advantage. The chances of peeking ending anytime soon are highly unlikely. However, Riot Games may have found a way to mitigate the use of this tactic from Valorant.

, the team at Riot Games spoke about the 128-tick servers that Valorant uses. For context, shooters commonly used 64-tick servers, which was a major cause of these delays. Basically, these servers caused games to refresh only 64 times per second. The Valorant team knew this could cause issues and chose to double these refresh rates with 128-tick servers. They’ve been hard at work and seem confident that implementing this on consoles too isn’t just a pipe dream.

As Felipe Romero, a principal engineer in the Valorant development team, put it:

We believe getting Valorant running at 120Hz on next-gen consoles is an achievable goal.

This isn’t just a small step for the Valorant team; it’s a giant leap for competitive shooter games as a whole. Achieving this would mean that most players enjoy a fair and balanced experience for the most part. With Valorant’s next big move to mobile, implementing this would significantly help Riot Games.

Why this would be significant for shooters like Valorant

For competitive games to thrive, balanced gameplay is everything. Even the tiniest second can make a world of difference for gamers. By making 128-tick servers the standard for Valorant, Riot Games has set a benchmark for the genre.

With their resilience, the Valorant team has demonstrated how successful a competitive shooter can be. Valorant has been dominating the competitive scene for years now, and with their tech moving into consoles, the sky’s the limit.

Despite all these ways to mitigate unfair practices, peeking isn’t going to just vanish. Players always seem to find a way and the peeker’s advantage unfortunately still exists despite the Valorant team’s measures. However, this could most certainly improve the quality of life for console players, many of whom would be playing the game for the very first time. With studios taking measures that push the limits of technology, it’s safe to assume that problems like this will soon be a distant memory.
