Three homes destroyed in Arthur River as five bushfires burn in Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions

Three houses have been destroyed at properties in the Wheatbelt as WA’s hot conditions continue to wreak havoc across the State.

No lives have been lost in up to five fires that are still burning in West Arthur, Bremer Bay and Narrikup across the Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions with residents asked to stay alert and continue monitoring the situation.

Three homes were lost in Arthur River, about 200km south-east of Perth, and another home believed to be near Yellanup Road, in Narrikup, was also lost in a fire yesterday.

About 11,000 hectares have been scorched in the Arthur River blaze, with power supplies affected leaving more than 600 properties without power.

The Cook Government this morning announced a new $250m State Emergency Management Training Centre at a yet to be decided location.

Aerial crews were sent in to help firefighters battle the Arthur River blaze as it threatened lives and homes yesterday.

It was reported about 1pm and quickly became ferocious, sparking an emergency warning just after 2.30pm.

The Narrikup blaze was reported at the same time, prompting an even quicker emergency warning about 45 minutes later.

As of Saturday morning, Reef Beach near Bremer Bay remained in an emergency zone, with people at Reef Beach and the surrounding areas in parts of Bremer Bay told to act immediately to survive.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said the Bremer Bay townsite remained open and outside any fire zones, but routes had been impacted.
