EGCA’s top team defeated but E-section skipper blasts century in final

Eastern Goldfields Cricket Association’s unsuccessful A-section campaign at the annual country week series in Perth fizzled out on Friday with a Twenty20 loss against Bunbury for third place.

It was a disappointing end to the week for the EGCA, who headed into Thursday’s semifinal round in outright second place.

But the side’s hopes of advancing to Friday’s A-section final at the WACA Ground were dashed a day earlier in a four-wicket loss against Albany, who met Geraldton in the decider.

After winning the toss on Friday and batting, the EGCA compiled 150 in 17.5 overs.

The innings was led by Sam Burge, who blasted an entertaining 66 off 28 ****** from the No.4 spot.

It included six boundaries and five sixes, but it was slim pickings among the rest of the order with No.8 Aarib Tareen Khan’s 22 off 15 ****** the next-highest score.

In reply, Bunbury cruised to 5-151 in just 12.2 overs when hard-hitting No.5 batter Corey Chantrill went at a strike rate of 246.66 in his unbeaten 74 off 30 deliveries.

His knock was punctuated by four boundaries and eight sixes after opener Riley Stenhouse earlier contributed 29 off 19 ******.

Also on Friday, the EGCA’s E-section captain Alex Jerrard spearheaded his team’s victory in the final against Busselton-Margaret River with a superb 102 off 118 ******.

His innings included seven fours and a six and fellow opener Jarrod Lucas made 36 in the EGCA’s 7-253.

After 19 overs in reply, Busselton-Margaret River trailed by 177 runs with eight wickets in hand and they were bowled out for 167 as Corey Johnston grabbed 3-31.

In D-section, Esperance lost their final game against Fortescue and the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Cricket Association were bowled out for 40 after Newman earlier compiled 5-290.

Esperance’s E-section side were beaten by South Midlands for overall seventh place.
