Big Bash League: Perth Scorchers Cooper Connolly and Jason Behrendorff named in team of the tournament

Perth Scorchers sensation Cooper Connolly and superstar teammate Jason Behrendorff have been named in the Big Bash League’s team of the year.

Connolly finished the season as the leading run-scorer, while Behrendorff took the most wickets, despite the Scorchers missing the finals for just the third time in their history.

The spinning all-rounder is also among the frontrunners to be named the player of the tournament. No Perth player has ever claimed that prize.

The pair are joined by West *********** natives Marcus Stoinis and Tim David in the team.

Former Test great David Warner has been named captain and opener of the side, after finishing just five runs shy of Connolly in his first full-time season with Sydney Thunder.

He was named at the top of the order alongside breakout Hobart all-rounder Mitch Owen, with Connolly at No.3, Stoinis at No.4, Thunder import Sam Billings at No.5 and wicketkeeper and Glenn Maxwell at No.6.

David was named at seven in a deep batting order, then followed by a bowling attack that includes Sydney Sixers gun Ben Dwarshuis, Melbourne Renegades quick Tom Rogers, Behrendorff and Adelaide Strikers leg-spinner Lloyd Pope.

The Strikers’ English all-rounder Jamie Overton was named 12th man, despite missing the end of the tournament.

Connolly scored 351 runs for the tournament and took six wickets in a remarkable season where he was thrust into the important No.3 role just days before their opening match.

It was enough to help him earn selection in a Test squad for the first time and the 21-year-old is training with the national team in Dubai.

Behrendorff took 17 wickets — including three in Saturday’s win over Adelaide — to lead the competition, but his future is under a cloud.

The Scorchers champion has not been contracted for next season, meaning he will become a free agent for 10 days next week.

The West *********** understands Melbourne Renegades have tabled a multi-year offer that would make him one of their highest-paid players.

Behrendorff took 1-34 on debut for Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 competition on Wednesday night. The quick and Scorchers captain Ashton Turner jetted off the tournament less than a day after Perth’s finals hopes ended.

League boss Alistair Dobson said the team of the tournament showed the competition can be a springboard for the country’s best young players.

“It is brilliant to see the likes of David Warner and Jason Behrendorff earn selection for the first time, alongside a host of other experienced players. Their performances over many years reflect all players’ dedication to the BBL,” he said.

“Similarly, the BBL has been the launch pad for young players like Cooper Connolly and Mitch Owen, and a place for internationals including Sam Billings and Jamie Overton to showcase their talent. We know fans love watching them, and all members of this team, every night over the summer holidays.”
