Australia Post delivers Q2 online shopping habits report

*********** shoppers are bargain hunters with a growing inclination for online purchases, new Australia Post data has revealed.

The nationwide delivery service shipped its largest-ever haul of packages across the busy November and December months, with 103 million parcels moving from warehouses to houses over the *******.

The record delivery marked a 3.1 per cent bump from the same ******* in 2023, with 7.6 million households making an online purchase over the two months.

Australia Post executive general manager for parcel, post, and e-commerce services Gary Starr credited the surge to an increasingly “strategic” *********** shopper waiting for optimal ***** periods to release their spend.

“As we look ahead, retailers have a tremendous opportunity to learn from and capitalise on the growing appetite for online shopping, especially during key sales events,” he said on Thursday.

“The record-breaking cyber weekend (from November 29 to December 2), which saw a 7.8 per cent growth in online purchases compared to the sometime last year, shows Aussies are waiting for these sales to do all their shopping at once, cementing strategic shopping as the new norm.”

The health and wellness sector propelled spending, Australia Post data shows, with a 20.5 per cent year-on-year lift, followed by “athleisure” with a 15.8 per cent increase, and tools and gardening items with a 14.6 per cent increase.

The North Queensland town of Mackay was the top postcode by total volume, followed by Toowoomba in South East Queensland and Point Cook in Victoria.

Every state and territory, meanwhile, recorded a lift in parcel volume growth.

The Northern Territory led the way with a 12.4 per cent jump, followed by Tasmania (11.4 per cent), South Australia (8.9 per cent) and Western Australia (7.2 per cent).
