Hughes Fire in Los Angeles County prompts evacuation orders

A fast-growing brush fire forced evacuation orders in the Los Angeles County community of Castaic on Wednesday, officials said.

The blaze, which officials named the Hughes Fire, was first reported shortly after 10:30 a.m. along Lake Hughes Road, near Castaic Lake and the 5 Freeway, according to Cal Fire.

It grew beyond 5,054 acres in less than three hours.

The Hughes Fire ignited in Castaic on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

Hughes fire evacuation orders

Neighborhoods surrounding Lake Castaic Lake were placed under mandatory evacuation orders, while other nearby neighborhoods were under evacuation warnings.

Valencia High School, 27801 Dickson Drive in Valencia, was designated as an evacuation center.

Large animals were being accepted Lancaster Animal Care Center, 5210 West Avenue I in Lancaster, as well as at the Antelope Valley Fair, 2551 West Avenue H in Lancaster.

Hughes fire road closures

The 5 Freeway was shut down as a result of the fire, according to the California Highway Patrol. Northbound traffic was being stopped at Parker Roak, while southbound traffic was blocked at Lake Hughes Road.

Road closures were put in place on Ridge Route Road at Lake Hughes Road, Ridge Route Road at Templin Highway, Lake Hughes Road at Pine Canyon Road and Dry Gulch Road at San Francisquito Canyon Road, CHP officials said.

Hughes Fire not a threat to Ventura County
