Brisbane forward Eric Hipwood on road to recovery after off-season surgery

Lions defender Jack Payne says teammate Eric Hipwood’s recovery from a groin problem that hampered him last season is on track ahead of Brisbane’s 2025 AFL premiership defence.

With the aid of injections, Hipwood played through the pain of an issue reportedly likened to osteitis pubis to help the Lions win their first flag since 2003.

Off-season surgery was required, with Hipwood making good progress in his reported bid to get some match minutes under his belt in Brisbane’s pre-season trial against Adelaide on February 27.

“He’s going really well,” Payne said of Hipwood on Wednesday from a Lions training and community camp on the Sunshine Coast.

“He’s back running now. He’s back-ended at the moment, so he’s doing Monday and Friday which are his ******* sessions, and Wednesday’s more an off-leg type (session).”

Payne said he was in a similar situation with his training loads as he prepared to be in the best possible shape for the Lions’ opening game of the season against Geelong at the Gabba on March 6.

“The body’s good,” said Payne, who missed Brisbane’s grand final loss in 2023 after suffering an ankle injury before bouncing back to play in last year’s decider, which the Lions won by 60 points against Sydney.

“It’s a tale of two stories – missing out on ‘23 and then playing the year after in ‘24.

“We’ve got some practice games coming up next month, so it’s not too far around the corner for some games, which is exciting.”

The Lions will remain in camp on the Sunshine Coast until Friday.
