The Division 2 Still Struggles to Keep Up With Destiny 2’s Popularity Despite Having a Better New Player Experience

Despite being released nearly 2 years after the FPS extraordinaire Destiny 2, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 has been in a bit of a slump lately – failing to beat Bungie in the free-to-play shooter genre by a rather large margin.

There are multiple factors to take into consideration here, but Ubisoft’s recent downward spiral is certainly the most to blame here. This is a shame, given that The Division 2 actually features a better new player experience when compared to the other title.

In stark contrast to Bungie’s Destiny 2, The Division 2 feels a lot less cumbersome to jump into for a newbie. Missions are brief and to the point, guiding players through the basics of the game.

The starter missions, for example, feature a decent amount of context and are dead simple to walk through, introducing players to concepts and lore tidbits that translate well into in-game elements and mechanics. In stark contrast, Destiny 2 feels a lot more complicated, even down to the storyline – which despite its grander scale can be easy to get lost in compared to the rather linear experience offered by the other game.

This linear narrative works very well in its favor, despite the higher difficulty. Part of it has to do with the fact that there has been only one expansion (Warlords of New York), but Destiny 2 on the other hand could have fared a bit better in this regard had they retained the original tutorial segment instead.

Despite many complications, Destiny 2 remains the overall better game

Of course, not everything in a game is centered around the new player experience – players also have to take into account mid and end-game content, and it is here where Destiny 2 shines through.

Bungie’s game features a lot of things to do and has matured to the point of accumulating several high-quality expansions which is something The Division 2 is really lacking in at present. There have not been any major changes in Ubisoft’s title in the past 2-3 years, which does feel like a bit of a stagnation.

There’s a lot to like here, including the overall lore, excellent story, and cool factor which all draw sparks from the original Halo trilogy.

The Division 2 is still a fun game, but it really should be doing something a bit extra to draw in new players to keep the game alive and well. This is evident from

, which peg the active player base at nearly a tenth of that of Destiny 2. This is also a major factor for newcomers, as gaining access to active lobbies is kind of important.

However, at the end of the day, The Division 2 is a Ubisoft product and comes with all the shortcomings and issues that have plagued the developer in recent years – which coupled with the potential release of another sequel might push most players away from joining the game.
