Gulf Coast Freeze: School closings, schedule changes

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — We’re tracking how freezing weather could impact Gulf Coast schools. This is your one-stop destination for possible school closures and schedule changes affecting our coverage area. (Check back for updates!)

Baldwin County Public Schools

Baldwin County Public Schools Superintendent Eddie Tyler said he hasn’t decided about school closures for the week of Jan. 20, aside from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., observance already scheduled.

But he did give some guidance.

“For your family’s planning purposes, know that IF there is snow or freezing rain predicted overnight any day next week, then it is likely we will close schools,” Tyler said in his latest post on the school system’s webpage. “Icy roads and bridges in the early morning hours are very dangerous to our bus operations.

“Remember, students are out of school this Monday, January 20th, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday,” Tyler said. “I will be back in touch with you about any weather impacts on Monday or sooner if necessary.

“Please pay attention to your email, text and social media. Also, remember not to rely on rumors. If we close, you will hear directly from me through our standard channels.”

Chickasaw City Schools

Chickasaw City Schools has shared no final decisions about school schedules ahead of winter weather.

“We are closely monitoring the weather conditions for early next week in collaboration with local weather agencies and emergency management officials,” the school posted on

Mobile County Public Schools

Mobile County Public School System Superintendent Chresal D. Threadgill said there’s a “strong possibility” that MCPSS campuses will be closed Tuesday, but no final decision has been made.

Parents can expect that decision to come late Sunday evening or Monday morning, she said.
