The Jets looked in pole position to snap their five-game winless streak at Porirua Park on Sunday after Sheridan Gallagher scored a first-half double in her return from suspension. But the hosts flexed their muscles in the second half and slowly chipped away at the deficit. Elliott came off the bench and began the attack with her 50th-minute goal before Annalie Longo leveled the scores nine minutes later. It was another Elliott goal, directly from a corner kick with two minutes of added time left, that secured the three points for the hosts. Wellington climbed up to fourth on the table on goal difference, while ninth-placed Newcastle had their winless streak extended to six games. For Gallagher’s opener, Lara Gooch worked cleverly down the right wing with a nutmeg against Phoenix defender Mackenzie Barry to set up Deven Jackson but the initial attack was snuffed out. With goalkeeper Carolina Vilao down and right-back Alivia Kelly too slow to react, Gallagher pounced on the crumbs to score. In a display of her rugby league craft, the cross-code star then outmuscled Barry with a strong drive down the right wing to find her second. Gallagher had been suspended after collecting her fifth yellow card in their round 9 draw with Adelaide United. Newcastle are likely be without Jackson through concussion after the winger clashed heads with Kelly in the 60th minute. Wellington were denied a goal in the most dramatic fashion in the 24th minute, when Maya McCucheon’s long-range shot and teammate Olivia Fergusson’s follow-up both came back off the crossbar. Mebae Tanaka was next up in line for the ‘Nix and her header seemed to have put the ball over the line before Jets defender Tash Prior cleared the threat. Without VAR in the women’s competition, the goal was disallowed. Sydney FC look to end their own winless streak of seven matches when they face Central Coast, before Brisbane play Adelaide later on Sunday.
