Cyclone Sean: West Aussies told to prepare for dangerous weather as cyclone forms off Pilbara coast

A tropical cyclone is just hours away from forming off the WA coast, with residents being told to prepare now for dangerous weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued updated advice just after 5.30am, warning of destructive wind gusts and minor flooding once the tropical low sitting off the Pilbara coast develops into Tropical Cyclone Sean about 11am on Sunday.

“A tropical low north of the Pilbara coast is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone today,” the BoM stated.

“The developing low is expected to continue moving west, parallel to the Pilbara coast.

“From Monday onwards, the cyclone is expected to turn towards the southwest, while remaining over open waters. By this time, the cyclone is expected to begin moving away from the coast.”

The warning zone is for areas from Port Hedland to Ningaloo, including Karratha, Dampier, Onslow and Exmouth.

Damaging wind gusts are expected in coastal areas between Port Hedland and Exmouth, including Karratha and Dampier. Those wind gusts are forecast to extend west of Mardie to Ningaloo on Sunday afternoon.

Large waves caused by the cyclonic conditions are expected to cause minor flooding between Port Hedland and Exmouth, with people in those areas told to take measures to protect their property.

Tropical Cyclone Sean is expected to intensify to a category 3 by Monday but by then it is expected to have moved further away from WA’s coastline.
