) —  The United States Park Police confirmed that two people are dead after a pickup truck drove off the Arlington Memorial Bridge and fell into the Potomac River Thursday evening.

The incident happened on Jan. 16, when the truck was involved in a ****** with another vehicle. During the collision, the truck went through the bridge’s concrete railing and landed in the river, according to a spokesperson with the DC Fire and EMS Department.

Divers were called to the scene, where they searched for the truck and the driver.

After about 22 minutes, the fire department said a person was pulled from the water and brought to shore. They were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Two people, who were in the other car, which remained on the bridge, sustained minor injuries. Only one of them went to the hospital for treatment.

The United State Park Police later confirmed that the person who was pulled from the river died in the hospital. It was not clear whether the person was the driver or a passenger.

In an update Friday afternoon, officials said rescuers pulled a second person from the truck in the river. They were pronounced dead.

The Arlington Memorial Bridge remained closed and officials said it is unclear when it will reopen.
