Snow, freezing rain possible across southern Louisiana, Mississippi next week

NEW ORLEANS (

) — A cold front is set to move across the Southeast U.S. on Saturday, bringing showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. Following the front, a significant drop in temperatures is expected.

High temperatures are forecast to only reach the 40s across southern portions of Louisiana and Mississippi on Sunday. Morning lows early Monday are expected to dip into the mid 20s north of the I-10 and I-12 corridors, with upper 20s and low 30s farther south.

By Monday night, the coldest air of the season will arrive, with lows Tuesday morning possibly dipping into the teens in northern areas. Most locations should see overnight temperatures at least in the lower 20s. Cold weather advisories are likely to be issued by the National Weather Service.

There is also a chance of wintry precipitation for parts of the region on Tuesday. While uncertainty remains regarding the timing and type of precipitation, some areas along the Gulf Coast could see snow, sleet, and freezing rain (rain that freezes into ice after falling to the surface).

We don’t yet have clear answers about where, when, or what type of frozen precipitation—whether freezing rain, sleet, or snow—might occur. As it stands now, the predicted weather pattern often leads to “overrunning,” which can lead to more widespread freezing rain and icy conditions, creating a tricky situation.

In winter weather, overrunning can lead to various types of frozen precipitation:

Freezing Rain: If the warm air is thick enough to melt snow completely but the surface temperatures are below freezing, the rain refreezes on contact with cold surfaces, creating a layer of ice.

Sleet: If the warm air layer is thinner, snow partially melts and refreezes into ice pellets before reaching the ground.

Snow: If the air remains cold enough from the upper levels down to the surface, precipitation falls as snow.

Forecast models are still figuring out how this winter storm will unfold and whether it will arrive when the coldest air is in the region. While there’s still a lot of uncertainty, the likelihood of snow or ice impacting parts of the Deep South is slowly increasing.
