Channel 2 Gwinnett County Bureau Chief Matt Johnson was in court on Friday as four police officers testified about their previous arrests of the defendants, Josiah Hughley, David Booker and Miles Collins.

Prosecutors say their convictions or pleas related to stolen cars in their teens paved the way for the gang lifestyle they lived as adults.

On Friday, prosecutors documented the trio’s individual criminal histories across Rockdale and Fulton counties.

A former officer with the Atlanta Police Department testified that David Booker was a passenger in a stolen car in 2018 that led Atlanta police on a dangerous chase.

“We chased the suspects through a school while they were dismissing the students, so there were hundreds of kids outside and at one point a civilian was struck by the vehicle in the Grant Park neighborhood,” the officer said.

Another officer with the Conyers Police Department testified about Miles Collins’ arrests in previous slider crimes.

Josiah Hughley is the one accused of shooting and killing Coleman in July 2022. A state trooper testified he arrested Hughley in 2019 after he ditched a stolen car during a police chase.

“He fell on his face and he rolled on his back and from there I drew my Taser and gave him commands to surrender, which he did,” the trooper said.

Each suspect faces gang charges. Defense attorneys have argued there is insufficient evidence to prove gang ties.

Testimony is expected to resume as early as Tuesday.
