Lollies to be given to Leeds city clubbers to keep them quiet

Lollipops are to be handed to nightclubbers in Leeds in an effort to help keep them quiet following noise complaints from people living in a nearby block of flats.

The sweets will be given to people as they leave Home and Carousel after the city centre venue was given permission to stay open later.

At a council hearing on Tuesday, an application for the Albion Street premises to add an hour to its serving times each day was granted, with the club now allowed to sell alcohol until 04:00 on Sundays to Thursdays and 05:00 at weekends.

Home and Carousel operations director David Nejrup said giving lollipops to clubbers had been effective at other nightclubs and bars.

The venue opened on the site of the former Tiger Tiger bar in the city last year and is split into different parts.

Carousel is a bar featuring arcade games, while Home serves as a nightclub, though both are run together by the same operator.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, a Leeds City Council licensing sub-committee was told there was a trend for venues in the city to open later.

But councillors heard that people living in the nearby K2 Apartments had raised fears over noise and anti-social behaviour.

Tony Whitfield, on behalf of K2 tenants, said there had been problems in the past with the venue under its previous names and operators.

“Sound really does resonate through the building,” he said.

However, Mr Nejrup said noise-limiting measures taken at the premises had included moving the outdoor smoking area and the use of acoustic panelling in the downstairs club area.

“There should be no noise leakage from that nightclub,” he said.

Meanwhile, speaking about the idea of giving lollipops to clubbers at the venue, Mr Nejrup added: “As daft as it sounds, people tend to become quiet when they have something in their mouth.”
