Brush fire burns at least 10 acres on MCAS Miramar airfield

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Fire crews are working on extinguishing a brush fire in the area of Kearny Villa Road and Miramar Way that began Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported on Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar property around 2:22 p.m., according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.

As of 2:40 p.m., the fire was burning 3 to 4 acres with a moderate rate of spread. Forward progress on the fire was slowed around 2:52 p.m., according to authorities.

As of 3:23 p.m., the fire had burned at least 10 acres, according to SDFD. No structures were threatened.

shortly before 4 p.m. by MCAS Miramar, the brush fire had grown to about 12 acres. The fire was located on the airfield located south of the runways on base, it said.

The fire was reported just before a Red Flag Warning is set to take effect in parts of San Diego County due to Santa Ana winds.

The winds are expected to bring strong gusts and elevated fire weather conditions to inland areas starting at 4 p.m. Monday through 6 p.m. Wednesday.
