New Test ace Webster to winter with English county

Tasmania’s Beau Webster, who made a superb debut for Australia in the final Test against India, is to play for English county Warwickshire during the antipodean winter.

Webster played a crucial role in the fifth Test win In Sydney, scoring 57 and 39 not out as well as claiming the wicket of Shubman Gill with the ball and some sharp catches in the field.

The 31-year-old was named as the player of the year in the 2023/24 Sheffield Shield and helped Gloucestershire to last summer’s Blast title during an overseas stint last year.

He has agreed a three-month stint for first-class and T20 cricket, arriving at the start of May and remaining until the end of July.

Warwickshire are one of the stronger, better-resourced counties being based at Test venue Edgbaston. They have also signed New Zealand captain Tom Latham for 2025 and also have on their books former England allrounder Moeen Ali and current England caps Chris Woakes and Jacob Bethell.

“I’m really pleased to sign for the Bears for part of the 2025 season,” said Webster.

“Having played Birmingham League Cricket in the past, I have great memories of the people and the area.

“I played some Championship cricket last summer with Gloucestershire and loved the challenge of the competition. I look forward to meeting everyone in May.”
