Drew strike helps Bulls to comeback ALM win over Jets

Macarthur have have surged into the A-League Men top four after a second-half strike from Jed Drew helped them to a comeback 3-1 win over Newcastle.

With Socceroos coach Tony Popovic watching from the stands at McDonald Jones Stadium, Drew picked up the crumbs of teammate Bernardo’s failed scoring attempt to fire Macarthur ahead for the first time on Sunday in the 59th minute.

Jets substitute Wellissol found the back of the net in the 88th minute but his name never made the scoresheet, rubbed off since Lachlan Rose had tripped Macarthur’s Frances Deli to free up the ball.

Bernardo then struck truly in added time to put the win to bed and guide Macarthur to fourth on the table with their sixth-straight away win.

Drew’s sixth goal of the season makes him equal third in the league’s golden-boot standings alongside Wellington striker Kosta Barbarouses and Western Sydney’s Nicolas Milanovic.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are languishing in third-last spot after squandering their chance to notch their first home win of the season.

They have not won at home in seven matches since April 2024 and have won only three times across 11 games this campaign.

Macarthur were forced on the back foot early after Ben Gibson picked up a Clayton Taylor through-ball for the opening score on Sunday in the 18th minute.

But Bulls captain Valere Germain returned serve for Macarthur five minutes later, toe-poking Ivan Vujica’s cross home with ease.

Momentum swung back in favour of Newcastle late in the second half as the hosts desperately tried to salvage a point.

Bulls goalkeeper Filip Kurto flaunted his class as he kept a relentless Lachie Bayliss at bay twice in the 77th minute before Rose’s header was denied by the post.
