On Saturday, a team of Wildland firefighters were sent to California as part of a strike team that includes fire departments from Baytown, Conroe, Needham Fire and Rescue, North Montgomery County, and Porter.

“They just put out a call for help so we are going to help,” said Travis Hobbs of the Houston Fire Department.

The Baytown Fire Department sent four personnel to assist with the wildfires in Los Angeles. Crew members are anticipated to be gone for a 14-day deployment, but can be extended to up to 21 days if they need longer.

On Saturday, three members of the Killeen Fire Department were deployed to California to help with the fires. The department is sending the crew to staff a fire engine as a part of an Emergency Management Assistance Compact request, which is a mutual aid system with the Texas Division of Emergency Management agency.

“As firefighters, our commitment knows no borders,” Killeen Fire Chief Jim Kubinski said. “When communities are in crisis, we step up to support one another, no matter the distance. We are proud to lend a hand and do our part to protect lives and property.”

The Houston Fire Department will stop to rest today near El Paso before continuing Sunday to California.

“This is all of our saw equipment. This is what we’ll use to cut trees, get trees out of the road,” said Chris Mixon, of the Houston Fire Department. “Hose packs for major progressive ways, for structure protection.”

Firefighters with years of experience fighting fires in the terrain of Texas, are now packing up and putting those skills to use in California.

“Partnerships like this are key to the success of a world-class fire department. We are showing up for our brothers and sisters during their time of need the same way they have for us,” said Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz. “It is a privilege to lead this group of dedicated firefighters. Please keep the men and women close to your hearts as they bravely face this disaster, and continue to pray for those impacted in the Los Angeles area.”
