West Coast ruckman Matt Flynn says Eagles are backing Ginbey after mistake at music festival

West Coast midfielder Reuben Ginbey has returned to the club and was out to win back respect after a brush with police at a music festival at the weekend.

Ginbey was charged for allegedly urinating in public and refusing to give his personal details to police on Saturday and will face court next month.

Eagles teammates have wrapped their arms around the young West ***********, who made an impressive return to training and finished second in the club’s running testing on Thursday.

Ginbey finished runner-up to Jack Graham, who has continued to impress since shifting from Richmond in the off-season and backed up his performance pre-Christmas with a second win.

It is a good sign the mature-aged recruit will be well-placed to slot in on a wing or as an extra midfielder under former Tigers interim coach Andrew McQualter this season.

Ruckman Matt Flynn said Ginbey would take his punishment on the chin and backed him to move past the incident.

“He made a bit of a mistake, and boys are going to throw their arms around him and support him as best they can,” he said.

“It was unfortunate that he put himself into that position but I’m sure he’ll cop whatever comes his way.

“He’s a great lad so we’ll support him and just let him go into his 2025 and have another really good year.”

Flynn said the competition between Ginbey and Graham had pushed each other along.

“Reuben was always the pick of the runners and now he’s got Fridge there to compete with him and the better they are they will just lift each others standards,” he said.

“It’s exciting for Reuben to have someone to compete with and Fridge (Graham) and Bakes (Liam Baker) have both been exciting for the club and for our standards.”

Flynn said he had laid out plans for the 2025 season with new coach and former Richmond caretaker Andrew McQualter.

There is a strong Tigers flavour to the early days of McQualter’s tenure at West Coast and now he wants Flynn to take a leaf out of Toby Nankervis’ ruck book.

“Pre-Christmas everyone sat down with Mini and put our goals forward and had a bit of a conversation about what the year looks like for us,” Flynn said.

“He comes from Richmond and my ex-coach at the Giants Adam Kingsley was very similar and came from Richmond.

“The way they want a ruck to the play is in that mould of (Toby) Nankervis. Follow up, aggressive, get around the ground and impact too. So it may look a little bit different but it’s not something that I’m not used to.”

That will be put to work this pre-season for Flynn and he has also declared he is up for battling over the No.1 ruck spot with incumbent Bailey Williams.

“At the moment is just to work on that follow-up and that tackle pressure when I’m playing good footy it’s there and last year it wasn’t there unfortunately,’ he said.

“So for me, it’s to build on my tank to allow myself to have those repeat efforts and impact the game in that way.

“There’s only one position for the both of us and maybe one might get swung forward here and there but Baz and I are really good mates and get on really well but there is a bit of competitive juice with us and not sure which way that’s going to land or what the team structure is going to look like going forward.

“It’s been a good battle thus far he was obviously was a little bit limited pre Chrissy but I’m excited to train against him over the next six or seven weeks.”

Flynn conceded last year wasn’t “the season I wanted to have” as he battled a hamstring issue and wayward form.

“I did a lot of work in the off season getting that (hamstring) right and I’ve done a lot of work with the fitness staff here too so the body’s feeling really good and hopefully holds on and set myself up for a big 2025,” he said.

“I came across to a new city, a new club and I didn’t know anyone over here so that was all a challenge in itself, and then then to get injured right on the eve of the season wasn’t really ideal.

“I guess I learned a lot about myself and the people around me and leaning into that support, but with new coaching staff and new players around I’m really excited.

“It wasn’t the year I wanted to have, but hopefully this year can be a little bit different.”
